The Columbus Police Department’s Property Crimes Unit launched a shoplifting initiative in June 2026 to address retail theft and build stronger working relationships with local retailers. The effort comes ahead of the holiday shopping season, when stores often see an increase in theft.
On Wednesday, September 30, 2026, Joseph Griswold was extradited to Columbus, Georgia, from the Russell County Jail in Alabama, where he was being held on unrelated charges. Griswold was extradited to face a murder charge in connection with the death of Lawrence Perry.

Two arrests have been made in connection with the deadly shooting of Davon Wallace Grimes, 34.
On Wednesday, September 9, 2026, the Columbus Police Department’s Fugitive Unit arrested Richard Upshaw III. The following day, the Fugitive Unit, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service, arrested Allen Williams.
